The 2022 Lambeth Conference, “God’s Church for God’s World” began on Tuesday. This is a worldwide gathering of all the bishops of the Anglican Communion led by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Read the whole program and pray and study resources.
The controversy surrounding Lambeth this year revolves around the exclusion of the spouses of bishops with same-sex partners from spousal events. For more information, see writings from the Bishop of Maine, the Scottish Episcopal Church (working closely with our bishop), and the Episcopal News Services, “Episcopal bishops reject conservative Anglicans’ same-sex marriage ultimatum; ‘huge distraction’ for Lambeth” and “After LGBTQ+ resolutions smoothly moved through #GC80, Anglicanism’s human sexuality debate returns ahead of Lambeth Conference”.
Please join in praying for the Lambeth Conference and our bishop Thomas and his husband Tom, both of whom are there.
Loving God, we thank you for sending Jesus Christ to be born of a human mother, and to make the way of the Cross become for us the way of life; in him, you lead us from death to life.
Today as bishops gather for the Lambeth Conference, we praise you for calling us to be the church in Maine. Strengthen our affirmation of LGBTQIA+ people and their families, and confirm our heart’s desire to know and love your justice.
By the power of your Holy Spirit grant charity and wisdom to bishops; open the eyes of their hearts so that every part of your church may faithfully follow the One in whom you have become one of us, Jesus Christ. Amen.
