Today at St. Luke’s
The Flowers on the altar today are given by Wade McClay and Victor Tan to the Glory of God and in Thanksgiving of their 14 years together.
The Explorers have largely completed Hollis’ Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life. It’s been an insightful exploration into questions of the self for all of us. We’re now soliciting nominations for our next book study. All are welcome. We meet in the Chapter Room each Sunday from 8:45 ’til 9:45.
Conversation of Christian Education and Youth: Like many congregations in Maine, St. Luke’s is experiencing a decline in the number of children and youth involved in our programs and in the number of young families in the congregation. Are you committed to the spiritual formation of our young people? Do you have concerns or ideas that you would like to share? Interested being part of the solution and looking at spiritual formation in new ways? Please come to a conversation on Christian Education and youth in the lower hall on Sunday October 1 at 11:30. A flyer with basic information about our programs, including attendance over the past ten years, is available in the parish hall and on our website. Overview of Current Programs
Celebration of Albert Melton’s 20th Anniversary Today: Please join us as we celebrate Albert’s 20th anniversary as our Cathedral Musician at a special Evensong at 4:00 pm. In honor of Albert’s service to the Cathedral, we commissioned the composer Alfred Fedak composed a new setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (evening canticles). We will hear this beautiful composition at this special Choral Evensong service this Sunday followed by a celebration in the upper parish hall. Thank you for all of your generous contributions to mark this special occasion.
Twilight in the Chapel: We are delighted to welcome musician Kate Beever to our twilight service tonight. Kate will be playing solo vibraphone during the service. Please join us at 5:15 in Emmanuel Chapel for an intimate and welcoming Rite II Eucharist.
The Caregivers Support Group continues to meet every other Wed. at 10:30am. Our next meeting is October 4 in the Oratory off the lower hall. You can enter by the back door off the parking lot. We welcome anyone who is caring or has cared for someone with an incapacitating illness, including spouses, children or friends who want to share difficulties and are looking for solutions. The group is led by Mary Leigh Hanson and Ralph Cordes. Please join us for one session or come on a regular basis.
The Thursday Theological Study group begins its eighth consecutive year on October 5th. We will use this study time to understand better, and to analyze Jesus’ teaching on the Gospel, and the inauguration of the New Aeon. Facilitating our study will be Paul Tillich’s The New Being, and Anders Nygren’s Commentary on the Romans.
Dr. Robert Hanson will present papers on the several stages of the issue. All are welcome. We will meet immediately after out Thursday night church suppers. We meet in the Chapter Room. Come, enlarge your understanding of our Lord’s mission and message. Dare to see yourself living in the new Aeon.
Here go the Lukuleles yet again – starting Monday night at 7:00, October 2, in the Upper Parish Hall – playing songs that will take us from here to there in lots of fun ways. Please enter from the Park Street door between 6:30 and 7:15. Come along and join in the fun and be surrounded by supportive uke’sters, some who are picking it up for the first time, some who’ve been uke’ing for a while, and lots of others in-between.
The Return of Thursday Night Suppers! The Vestry is pleased to announce that we are bringing back Thursday Night Community Suppers! Please join us for supper on October 26th from 6-8 pm. (Please note date change from last week). These meals will be catered with some embellishments and be paid for by a small suggested donation. We look forward to seeing you there!
Blessing of the Animals: Bring your pets next Sunday, October 8 for our annual Blessing of the Animals. We’ll gather in the circle with the Dean at 9:45 for the blessing and all are welcome to then bring their pets to the worship service. Please bring a leash or carrier for your pet.
Pathways to Peace (a.k.a. Miqra) – the fall youth event for grades 6-12 – October 7 -9: Join kids and teens from all over our diocese at St. Luke’s over the weekend of October 7-9 to explore Pathways to Peace. We’ll use games, activities and discussions to explore together how our differences can help to bring peace, joy, and justice to the world around us. We will discover stories of people in the bible, the international communities in Portland and our own stories. Bishop Steve will share how we are part of God’s dream for the world, and we’ll worship with the Sudanese community at Trinity Church in Portland. Leaders include Kim Wallace, Fred Fowler, the Rev. Sara D’Angio White and Jane Hartwell. There will be laughter, music, games, swimming, great food and new friends. We hope you join us! Register at www.maineyouth.org.
