Announcements July 16, 2016


Welcome Alice Goshorn:  Beginning in February Dcn. Alice Goshorn, a member of St. Luke’s since Advent 2012, served as Deacon at the Sunday 10:00 am Eucharist during Dcn. Dick Rasner’s recovery from knee replacement surgeries. Now that Dcn. Rasner has retired from St. Luke’s and has returned to his hometown of Cincinnati, Alice has agreed to continue serving as Deacon in the Sunday 10:00 am Eucharist at least to the end of this year. Alice comes to us from the Diocese of Indianapolis where she served as a Parish Deacon and as Archdeacon at the time of her retirement to Maine in 2012.

Albert Melton’s 20th Anniversary:  We appreciate contributions to the fund  honoring  Albert Melton’s 20th anniversary as Cathedral Musician.  It makes sense to name a date to finish this process, so we are asking that you make your contribution no later than Sunday, July 30.  As stated before, our goal is to raise $3,000 for the composer Alfred Fedak to compose a new setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (evening canticles) for St. Luke’s in Albert’s honor.  You may turn in your financial contribution directly to either of us, or to Lynne England in the church office. Thanks to those who have already given, and we look forward to hearing from more of you.  This seems like a great way to mark the occasion in honor of Albert’s ministry among us.

The Explorers are deeply into the forest!  Darkness is everywhere.  There are no comfortable places to stop and rest, but we’re not lost.  The trail is steep and rocky.  We’re following James Hollis’ map, ‘Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life’, and our guide has traveled this way before.  And, we have one another.  We’ve struggled to get to the 3rd trail marker and are now moving toward the 4th.  All our survival capacities are being challenged, but progress is being made.  Join us for the challenge of your life.  We shelter ourselves in the Chapter Room on Sunday mornings from 8:45 – 9:45.  There are resource papers for managing difficult parts of the trail.

Healing Team:  There will be no Team members scheduled through the four (4) Sundays in August or the first Sunday in Sept.  We will return on Sunday, Sept. 10th.

Please remember our kids in Duny, Haiti, who depend on your support for school lunches. Please donate your spare quarters (25c, or more, if possible). We thank you for your generous support!

Calling all Photographers! Have you snapped off some pictures on your camera or I-Phone of events in the past couple of years here at St. Lukes?  Our communications department would love to take a look at them!  Email them to and you might get to see them in a flier, poster or on social media.  Help us show the greater community what a great place St. Lukes is!

A friendly reminder for those using our beautiful space:   when you are here, whether for a meeting, concert, service etc., please, if you are the last to leave, check that the lights are out and the doors are closed and locked, both for the security of our  building and the conservation of our electricity.  Thank you!

Save the Date

Dan Knudsen, Juniper Ginger, Faith Francis, and Molly Ladd Live at St. Luke’s: Join local musician and St. Luke’s parishioner Dan Knudsen and three lovely and talented fellow local Maine singer/songwriter/guitarists and friends on July 14 from 7:00 – 9:30 pm in the Emmanuel Chapel.  Suggested donations of $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. We look forward to seeing you there.

An Immigrant Outreach Committee has been formed at St. Luke’s to explore how our church might best support immigrants in our community.  Our next meeting is Monday, July 17 from 6:30-8 in the Oratory.  If you have questions, contact Linda Carleton.

The Holiday Fair Monthly Meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 25th from 6-8pm in the upper hall. The table lay-out is complete and we are now getting the “Captains” assigned.  There are a few tables in need of a Captain and we are looking to fill the positions asap.  Please let us know if you are interested in helping or have a friend/family member available.  We continue to accept donations and have asked specifically for Jewelry and Vintage Linens.  A Drop off table will be set up each Sunday in the upper hall.
